The end of February is always a good thing, especially for athletes in the north. One step closer to spring, clear roads and good riding, among other things. The good news though is always offset somewhat by the end of the National Challenge Competition - three months of focused training and of watching the miles pile up come to an end and we have to find some other motivation to keep us going.
This year of course the end of the NCC fell on the same day as the end of the winter Olympics. Giant inflatable beavers aside, I think most of us were sad to see the end of the games. Even through the fog it was inspiring to see so many incredible athletes, and both the U.S. and host nation Canada had outstanding games overall.
This year's NCC was also a big success. We saw the largest number of teams and athletes take part since the competition began in 2006, and we saw the rise of some new teams to watch. Sure San Diego was a powerhouse as usual, but the Buffalo Tri Club had a great competition as did Hammerhead, Team Fraser and of course the crazy Alaskans.
So thanks to everyone who who swam, biked and ran their way through the winter again. Have a great race season and make sure you come back again next year.
Final results will be posted in a few days. Club reps can post February miles until midnight on March 3, so keep checking the site for up to date standings.
