Hi Bobwo - you have until midnight january 2 to enter miles for december. there is a blog post about it too, plus there is a message for club reps after you login. So 48 extra hours to enter miles for the swim session.

RE: Overall Athlete Standings

We agree with ya'. Along with the NCC competition we are having our own local challenge & awards internally for the individuals competing and logging miles. We also feel the bikers are heavily favored so we came up with a weighting system for our awards.

1 swim mile = 10 points
1 bike mile = 1 point
1 run mile = 2.8 points

I realize there is no "perfect" method, but this is the first year we're using this scheme and it's really energized the swim portion of the competition. Although our swim miles aren't putting much of a dent into the overall miles on the NCC board, they are making a significant impact towards the "points" for our local awards.

Happy training!

RE: Swimming mileage calculation

Hi Stacey - after checking with USAT we are going to stay with 1 mile = 1760 yards. That's the standard for races, I believe, and since it was never explicitly stated that 'pool miles' would be used for the competition then we have to stay with the full 1760 yards per mile.

RE: Divisions?

Ok, according to this year's rules the Divisions are based not on the number of athletes in your club who are competing in the NCC, but rather the total number of athletes in your club. Have a look at the blog for an explanation but the idea is to try to get as many of your club members as possible to sign up and take part in the NCC. So if you belong to the Enormous Triathlon Club of Metropolis USA, you'll be competing against all the other big clubs even if only 10 of your members join up.

This is the first year the Divisions have been tried. If this system is something you feel isn't quite right then please let USAT know and we can try to make it better for next year.

Swimming mileage calculation

RE:Indoor cycling miles

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your reply. We don't have any computer components for the indoor cycles at our health club so that is not an option for us. I understand the difficulty of estimating the mileage. I would ask that you make an announcement to all the participating teams stating this decision so that everyone is clear about the rule. We noticed on another tri club's blog that they are estimating indoor cycling mileage and including it in the Challenge.

Thanks,
Stacy

-----------------
Re: indoor training miles. Stacey, I spoke (ok, emailed) with USAT HQ, and simply estimating mileage for stationary bikes without computers will not work, unfortunately. Not everyone outputs the same power on a trainer, so there is no accurate (and therefore fair) way to estimate mileage based only on time ridden. They suggested putting the computer components on the back wheel instead of the front. Do you think this will work for you?

Divisions?

When I registered for the competition, I reached out for additional information regarding the divisions and how participation would be measured. I was told that I should submit my entire clubs roster and that the divisions will be revised to reflect actual participation at the end of each competition. That said, I want to be sure that this is truly the case, and that the size of my club's roster will in no way determine final scoring related to the deciding which division we are placed from.

My concern is valid in that of the 90 people in my club, only 22 have agreed to participate, and of those 22, only 12 actually have.

If this is not the case, I need to redo my registration to remove the names of all the additional people on my roster so that we have a real chance of placing well.

Please advise and thanks, this competition has been a blast so far. It's really motivated a lot of us into getting ready for next season.

I like your idea, but for this year it's too late to change the rules midstream. You really should talk directly to USAT about this, and I would need a fair bit of lead time to work that algorithm into the results. Point taken though about the bike miles, but that's why there is one session for each event.

My concern is that, since a bike mile is worth the same in the overall standings as a run or swim mile, the pure bikers are always going to come out on the top. My recommendation to even out the standings would be that a run mile would be worth three times as much as a bike mile and a swim mile would be worth six times as much as a bike mile.

Hi Stacy - that's a tough one. Without a computer it's pretty hard to accurately calculate the mileage, but we don't want to exclude your team from participating. I will check with USAT HQ on that one, but in the meantime keep track of the hours you ride so you can enter the mileage later. 15mph sounds reasonable for trainer rides, but USAT has the final say on this one.

Many members in our club participate in indoor cycling classes on Lemond bikes. These bikes do not have the pilot and therefore don't display mileage. Can we count the workouts done on these bikes toward the National Challenge Competion by logging some average number, for example 15 miles for a 1 hour class?
